Washington Hospital Center is among the United States top hospitals. The hospital has been recognized by several organizations for its excellence, including U.S. News & World Report's Top Hospitals. The nonprofit hospital is a member of MedStar Health. It is licensed for 907 beds and operates at near capacity. Health services in primary, secondary and tertiary care are offered to adult and neonatal patients. The hospital is home to one of the nation s top cardiovascular programs. In addition to its cardiac-care specialties, the Washington Hospital Center is recognized in other areas, including cancer, neurosciences, gastrointestinal disorders, endocrinology, women s services, transplantation and burn. Washington Hospital Center was established in March 1958 when three specialty hospitals merged into one. In 1998, Medlantic Healthcare Group, the hospital s parent company, merged with Helix Health, a group of four Baltimore based hospitals. The center occupies a 47-acre campus in northwest Washington, D.C.
